Well, today is Monday here in beautiful Kenya, and I am about to start what I consider my first official day here at icipe. Today is my first day of work. I am sitting waiting for breakfast and I have already met a coworker here. Her name is Margaret and she was so nice. After only a few minutes she was calling me friend. It makes me smile to know they will be so welcoming!
I am incredibly excited for today, although I am a bit nervous too. But I am ready to embrace, learn, and befriend many people here.
Yesterday I met two Swiss people staying here also. They fund some of the research that goes on here, so they are visiting for the week and will leave Wednesday. They were so funny and made the night much more enjoyable. One of them is staying in a room that has WiFi. The WiFi doesn't reach my room and he recommended that I ask to switch after he leaves since I am here for such an extended amount of time. I may just do that!
I have learned that icipe has some stray cats wandering around. I am fairly certain they only want our food, since they don't seem to keen on being pet. Sam (one of the Swiss men) told me I should feed it regularly and name it Büsi. This is the word the Swiss use to say kitten. However, the pronunciation of Büsi in Swahili means either goat or sheep (he can't remember which). He said others would think it is funny, but that I would really know what it means :)
Well before I go today, I would like to take a minute to say some thank-yous. My first goes to my family for their support and encouragement while I am here. My second to my boyfriend and his family who are always there for me. Thirdly, to my church family. It is such a relief to know that I have such a strong faith that I can always look to, and I believe that my strong faith is due in part to the many members of my church who are always there for me. Helping me, teaching me, and guiding me. Thank you all for your prayers you are sending my way! It is truly a blessing to have so many caring people in my life. Lastly, but certainly not least, I would like to say thank you to icipe and the World Food Prize Foundation for this amazing opportunity I have been given. I truly believe that this internship will open my eyes to so many things and that the experience will stay with me my entire life.
I can't wait to share my experiences with everybody when I get home!
I'll let you know how my first day goes here at icipe!
Cheers!
